A chamber cover has one job: seal a chamber or manhole while carrying whatever passes over it. Fit a footpath-rated cover under truck traffic and it cracks; over-spec every cover and your project costs balloon. The load class is how you match the cover to the load — here's what each class means and how to choose.
The four load classes
Load class describes the maximum load a cover is built to bear. From lightest to heaviest, the classes you'll commonly specify are:
- LD (Light Duty) — pedestrian areas, gardens, footpaths, and places with no vehicle traffic.
- MD (Medium Duty) — driveways, parking areas, and lanes with light vehicle traffic.
- HD (Heavy Duty) — roads and yards carrying regular heavy vehicles.
- Extra Heavy Duty (GK) — highways, industrial yards, and areas with the heaviest, most frequent loads.
RCC vs SFRC covers
You'll see covers described as RCC or SFRC. RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) covers use steel reinforcement bars. SFRC (Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete) covers mix steel fibres through the concrete, which improves crack resistance and can allow a slimmer, lighter cover at the same strength. Both are durable; the right choice depends on the load class, the chamber size, and your budget.
Gritting vs plain covers
Covers also come in gritting and plain finishes. A gritting (textured) top gives better grip underfoot and under tyres — useful in pedestrian and traffic areas alike — while plain covers suit locations where finish matters less. Gurukrupa Enterprises manufactures both types across LD, MD, HD, and Extra Heavy Duty classes.
How to choose in practice
- 1Identify what will pass over the cover — pedestrians only, light vehicles, or heavy trucks.
- 2Match that to the load class: LD, MD, HD, or Extra Heavy Duty.
- 3Confirm the chamber opening size so the cover seats correctly.
- 4If your size isn't standard, ask for a custom cover — these are made to requirement.
The most common and costliest mistake is fitting a driveway-rated cover on a road. Always specify for the heaviest load the location will actually see.
Gurukrupa Enterprises supplies RCC and SFRC chamber covers across Pune and Maharashtra, including custom sizes for non-standard chambers. Tell us the load class, chamber size, and quantity you need and we'll quote it.
