Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) pipes are the backbone of most drainage and sewerage networks across Pune and the rest of Maharashtra. But not every pipe is built for the same job — pick a grade too light for the load and you risk cracking; pick one heavier than you need and you overspend. This guide breaks down the two grades most projects specify, NP2 and NP3, so you can order with confidence.
What the 'NP' grade actually means
RCC pipes in India are classified under IS 458, which defines non-pressure (NP) classes by their strength and the load they can carry. The higher the number, the stronger the pipe. For most municipal and building work, the choice comes down to NP2 and NP3.
- NP2 — medium-duty non-pressure pipes for stormwater drains, roadside drainage, and light-traffic culverts where loads are moderate.
- NP3 — heavy-duty non-pressure pipes designed for deeper burial, heavier traffic, and main sewerage lines where the load and cover are greater.
How to decide between NP2 and NP3
Three factors usually settle the decision: the depth the pipe will be buried at, the traffic passing over it, and what it carries. Use this as a quick rule of thumb:
- 1Shallow stormwater or field drainage, light or no vehicle traffic → NP2 is typically sufficient.
- 2Roads, highways, or deep-buried lines with heavy vehicle loads → specify NP3 for the extra strength.
- 3Main sewerage carrying continuous flow → NP3 is the safer long-term choice.
When in doubt, ask about the burial depth and the traffic class. Those two numbers decide the grade more than anything else.
Getting the diameter right
Diameter is driven by the volume of water or effluent the line must carry. Gurukrupa Enterprises manufactures RCC pipes from 150mm up to 1200mm diameter, in both 2m and 2.6m standard lengths, so a single supplier can cover everything from a compound stormwater drain to a trunk sewer. Undersizing a line to save cost almost always backfires as overflow and maintenance later.
Why the manufacturer matters
Two pipes with the same printed grade are not always equal. Consistent cement-to-aggregate ratios, correct reinforcement placement, and proper curing are what let a pipe actually meet its rated load class. Buying from an established, GST- and MSME-registered manufacturer that supplies government projects gives you a paper trail and a quality standard you can rely on for infrastructure that has to last decades.
Gurukrupa Enterprises has manufactured and supplied RCC pipes from Naigaon, Pune since 2014 as a recognized government contractor. If you're unsure which grade or diameter your project needs, share your drawings or site details and our team will help you specify the right pipe.
